Heat Pumps vs. Air Conditioners

Choosing the Right Cooling Solution for Your South Denver Home

Don't Wait for the First 90° Day: AC Prep GuideHomeowners in South Denver often ask whether a heat pump or a traditional air conditioner is the better choice for Colorado’s climate. Both systems can cool your home, but they operate differently, and the best option depends on your heating needs, energy costs, and the age of your existing HVAC system.

This guide explains the differences between heat pumps and air conditioners, how they perform in Colorado weather, and which system is usually the better investment for homes in the South Denver area.

How an Air Conditioner Works

A central air conditioner removes heat from inside your home and releases it outdoors using refrigerant, a compressor, and an outdoor condenser unit. Air conditioners only provide cooling, so they must be paired with a furnace or other heating system for winter.

Most older homes in South Denver use a furnace and air conditioner combination because it has been the standard system for decades.

Advantages of Air Conditioners

  • Lower upfront cost than a heat pump

  • Works with existing gas furnaces

  • Reliable cooling in hot weather

  • Familiar system for most homeowners

Disadvantages of Air Conditioners

  • Cannot provide heat

  • Higher energy use compared to heat pumps

  • Fewer rebates available

  • Less efficient overall

How a Heat Pump Works

A heat pump provides both heating and cooling by moving heat instead of creating it. In summer, a heat pump works like an air conditioner by removing heat from inside your home. In winter, it reverses direction and pulls heat from the outdoor air to warm your home.

Modern cold-climate heat pumps are designed to work in Colorado temperatures and can operate efficiently even when outdoor temperatures are below freezing.

Advantages of Heat Pumps

  • Provides both heating and cooling

  • Higher energy efficiency than AC systems

  • Lower operating costs in many homes

  • Eligible for state tax credits and utility rebates

  • Works well in dual-fuel systems with a furnace

Disadvantages of Heat Pumps

  • Higher installation cost

  • May require electrical upgrades

  • Works best when properly sized and installed

  • Some homes still need backup heat in winter

Because of available rebates and improved technology, heat pumps are becoming more popular in South Denver and surrounding communities.

In many South Denver homes, the most efficient setup today is a dual-fuel system with a heat pump and gas furnace.

Why Heat Pumps Are Becoming Popular in South Denver

More homeowners in Littleton, Highlands Ranch, Centennial, Lone Tree, and Castle Rock are installing heat pumps when replacing older air conditioners. This trend is driven by energy costs, rebates, and improvements in cold-weather performance.

Reasons many homeowners choose heat pumps include:

  • Xcel Energy rebates for high-efficiency systems

  • Federal tax credits for heat pump installation

  • Lower long-term energy costs

  • Better efficiency in Colorado’s climate

  • Ability to heat and cool with one system

  • Reduced carbon emissions

Homes that are replacing both the furnace and air conditioner often benefit the most from switching to a heat pump system.

Which System Is Best for Your South Denver Home?

The right choice depends on several factors, including:

  • Age of your current furnace

  • Condition of your air conditioner

  • Electrical capacity of your home

  • Budget for installation

  • Available rebates and tax credits

  • Length of time you plan to stay in the home

A professional HVAC evaluation is the best way to determine whether a heat pump or air conditioner makes more sense for your specific home.

What Your Neighbors Are Saying About Us

Aaron came out to service my AC unit. He was prompt courteous and knowledgeable and did not try upselling which I appreciate. I like that this company sends photos of their technician ahead of the visit and ask for feedback on their performance. They are very customer centered. I also get great courteous service whenever I need to call and schedule with them. Highly recommend!
Sam S.
This was the most pleasant installation I’ve ever been part of. There was no attempt to upsell. Had a great conversation about what we needed, we set a date they were prompt, clean, and so professional. Did the job explain to us everything they did. I would use them seven days a week and twice on Sunday! Highly recommend!
Eric S.
These folks are the best HVAC company I think that I have ever worked with. Everyone and I mean everyone was wonderful! From Aaron who did a fantastic job assessing the system and getting the replacement mapped out, to Preston and Phaylan who did an amazing job with the install, to Lisa in the office who kept me informed and supported throughout the whole process. They are cost effective, super friendly and extremely high quality. I cannot thank them enough for a stellar job! Truly elite level service at a very accessible price. A++ all around!
Mike McD.
STRONGLY RECOMMEND! What a great experience. Chris McCollum was the technician that came out and identified the issue very quickly. I am always wary of these kinds of services and being upsold on solutions. He fixed the issue and gave me some options for preventative measures we could take to make the system last longer, but didn't push for any of them to be done immediately. Which weirdly made me more receptive to having some of these scheduled to be done soon.
Mary R.
Thank goodness for Southwest Heating and Cooling! They were so helpful on the phone when I called in to say that my thermostat seemed to be dead. Jeremiah was able to diagnose the problem, gave me a couple of options for the fix, and got everything taken care of right away. He was professional, explained everything to me, made sure all my questions were answered. Highly recommend.

This was the second time that I have had Southwest Heating and Air Conditioning upgrade my HVAC system and they did another excellent job. Jeremiah installed a new steam humidifier in my home and was professional, knowledgeable, and conscientious. He stepped me through the process and answered all my questions.
