Heat Pumps vs. Gas Furnaces

Choosing the Right Heating Solution for Your South Denver Home

Heat Pumps vs. Gas Furnaces - Heat Pumps

If you’re evaluating a new heating system, you’ve likely asked the same question many South Denver homeowners are asking today: Should I install a heat pump or stick with a gas furnace? The right answer depends on your home, comfort goals, and long-term energy priorities.

Since 1973, Southwest Heating & Cooling has been the trusted HVAC partner for homeowners in Littleton, Highlands Ranch, Centennial, Castle Rock, Lakewood, and throughout the entire South Denver Metro area. With more than 50 years of local expertise and a customer-first approach, we help homeowners understand the real-world differences between heat pumps and gas furnaces—so they can choose confidently.

The Core Difference: How They Heat Your Home

Gas Furnaces

Gas furnaces create heat by burning natural gas and distributing warm air through ductwork. They’ve been a common choice in Colorado for decades and can deliver strong heat during cold weather.

Heat Pumps

Heat pumps don’t create heat—they move heat. In winter, a heat pump extracts warmth from the outdoor air and transfers it inside. In summer, it reverses direction to provide cooling. This makes heat pumps complete heating and cooling systems, not just an alternative to air conditioning.

Performance in Colorado’s Climate

Modern cold-climate heat pumps are specifically designed to perform in freezing temperatures, making them a reliable option for South Denver winters. When properly selected and installed, they deliver steady, efficient heat during most winter conditions.

Some homeowners choose a hybrid or dual-fuel system, combining a heat pump with a gas furnace. This approach allows the heat pump to handle everyday heating and cooling, while the furnace provides backup during extreme cold.

Comparing Heat Pumps and Gas Furnaces

Energy Efficiency

Heat pumps are among the most energy-efficient HVAC systems available. Because they transfer heat instead of generating it, they often use significantly less energy than gas furnaces.

Heating and Cooling

Gas furnaces only heat. Heat pumps provide both heating and cooling in one system, potentially replacing both your furnace and air conditioner.

Operating Costs

Many homeowners see lower overall energy costs with heat pumps, especially when replacing older, inefficient systems.

Environmental Impact

Heat pumps reduce reliance on fossil fuels and can be paired with renewable electricity, supporting a cleaner energy future.

Installation Flexibility

Heat pumps work with ducted systems, ductless mini-splits, and hybrid configurations—making them suitable for a wide range of homes.

What Your Neighbors Are Saying About Us

Aaron came out to service my AC unit. He was prompt courteous and knowledgeable and did not try upselling which I appreciate. I like that this company sends photos of their technician ahead of the visit and ask for feedback on their performance. They are very customer centered. I also get great courteous service whenever I need to call and schedule with them. Highly recommend!
Sam S.
This was the most pleasant installation I’ve ever been part of. There was no attempt to upsell. Had a great conversation about what we needed, we set a date they were prompt, clean, and so professional. Did the job explain to us everything they did. I would use them seven days a week and twice on Sunday! Highly recommend!
Eric S.
These folks are the best HVAC company I think that I have ever worked with. Everyone and I mean everyone was wonderful! From Aaron who did a fantastic job assessing the system and getting the replacement mapped out, to Preston and Phaylan who did an amazing job with the install, to Lisa in the office who kept me informed and supported throughout the whole process. They are cost effective, super friendly and extremely high quality. I cannot thank them enough for a stellar job! Truly elite level service at a very accessible price. A++ all around!
Mike McD.
STRONGLY RECOMMEND! What a great experience. Chris McCollum was the technician that came out and identified the issue very quickly. I am always wary of these kinds of services and being upsold on solutions. He fixed the issue and gave me some options for preventative measures we could take to make the system last longer, but didn't push for any of them to be done immediately. Which weirdly made me more receptive to having some of these scheduled to be done soon.

Thank goodness for Southwest Heating and Cooling! They were so helpful on the phone when I called in to say that my thermostat seemed to be dead. Jeremiah was able to diagnose the problem, gave me a couple of options for the fix, and got everything taken care of right away. He was professional, explained everything to me, made sure all my questions were answered. Highly recommend.
